The Government of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) seeks well qualified individual to fill the Field Ethnographer position will be stationed in Chuuk State and is under the Office of National Archives, Culture & Historic Preservation, FSM National Government, located in Palikir, Pohnpei, FM 96941.
Position Description:
The purpose of this position is to contribute to Chuuk State’s ethnography program by participating in the first FSM National ethnography project. As this is an entry-level position, the incumbent will assist Chuuk State HPO with the collection of oral histories related to the National Project topic (an Intensive Level Ethnographic Survey on Ethnomethodology). They will assist with organizing the data as well as preparing summaries of the project and will work closely with both Chuuk State HPO and the FSM Anthropologist at the FSM Office of National Archives, Culture, and Historic Preservation (FSM NACH). They may be asked to assist with other ethnographic work upon completion of duties for the national project. This is a one-year position.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The applicant is responsible for the collection of cultural/historical information on all Chuukese traditional culture in both tangible and intangible forms including history of traditional landmarks, traditional social relationships of village/communities, traditional leadership, identification of qualified field workers such as Chuukese ethnographic information collectors, and informants, transcribes, translates and enters such information into the relevant databases, documents, reports, etc., or ensure that these processes/activities are conducted. The position involves meeting with the traditional councils and other chiefs, members of communities/islands, civic entities and individuals to discuss the cultural/historical intangible resources or topics to determine their cultural/historical or natural significance. The applicant should have a valid driver’s license.
Qualification Requirements:
Applicant must have at least completed high school and preferably completed at least two (2) years of college education with completed courses in anthropology, history, sociology, archeology, or Micronesian studies, or related field.
Salary:
A salary $10,000 per annum but not exceed $15,000 per annum depending upon the qualification of the applicant.
