Forest Stewardship Coordinator (FSM Department of Resource and Development) Chuuk [open until filled]
The Government of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is seeking a highly qualified and motivated individual to fill the position of Forest Stewardship Coordinator in Chuuk State with the Department of Resources and Development, FSM National Government.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Coordinate the implementation of the Project in a timely manner and be responsible for its financial, administrative, and technical oversight; prepare and submit detailed work plan; identify forest users and land owners for sustainable land development; provide technical Assistance to Landowners; educate private forest landowners and others on forests and active forest management; conduct outreach related to the program and to active forest managements in general and produce and disseminate awareness materials to local communities, NGOs and interested individuals; connect landowners with resources vital to helping them manage their land. Begin planning for Phase Two funding to improve nurseries on at least 5 islands (Weno, Tonoas, Fefen, Udot, and Eot) to produce tree seedlings and tree planting material; propagate and out plant or distribute to farmers and landowners for out planting, at least 5,000 seedlings of native, fruit, economic and indigenous trees; follow up to observe survival and growth wherever possible; collaborate with local farmers, leaders and forest users and NGOs in promoting agro-forestry system through awareness outreaches to identify the different climate-resilient crop varieties that can be considered for propagation; plan to proceed with Phase Two funding to planting of identified priority crops; breadfruit, citrus, other available fruit trees in Chuuk and with climate-resistant varieties can be obtained from outside partners; work with the sister States Agriculture Offices and FSM R&D for new technologies and methodologies for food security, agro-forestry and food production for pilot projects; facilitate long-term forest Planning: (This serves as the foundation for engaging forest landowners in a plan that address individual landowner objectives while adhering to National and State plan guidelines) Plans should include: Landowners’ and plan writers contact information; the property identification and location information Clearly state landowner goals and objectives; current forest stand conditions which could include past management activities; detailed recommended practices; and a detailed map of the property; spatial data are not required but encouraged to determine if plan is within a federal investment area; additional elements such as riparian zones, T&E and wetlands could be addressed if warranted; organize and manage meetings, including appointments with stakeholders/consultations, logistical arrangements and providing recording secretary support. Establish Chuuk State Forest Stewardship Coordinating Committee; manage the logistics and coordinate the activities/events, record and disseminate the outputs of technical and other working groups that may be formed in support of the various project deliverables; Other Forest stewardship activities as assigned.
Qualification Requirements:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Science, Agriculture, Agroforestry, Conservation, or a closely related field, plus three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience in forestry, natural resource management, agroforestry, conservation, agriculture, community development, or related areas.
Salary: A salary of $800 biweekly depending upon the qualifications of the applicant.
